Today the literary world, if not the world in whole, lost someone whose importance is too big to try and fit into words. I would be wasting both my time and yours if I tried to explain what Salinger did for myself and, more importantly, my writing. The only good that can come of his death are the following: the fact he will finally be left alone— the total seclusion he wished for so passionately while alive; and more selfishly, the hope that the work he refused to share will be published post-humously.

I just found out the tickets to the Margret Atwood lecture at USC on Friday are $50. Well worth it? Probably. But coming from the University of Iowa, where I went to multiple readings a month over the course of four years—all for free— that featured some of the best writers in the country, I’m hesitant to pay. We’ll see.
