DYING.
FROM ARTICLE: People like bank directors are regarded by some with respect, if not with awe, and resented by others. But the bank directors live in the same kind of houses as everyone else, and there is no way of telling, from their clothes or their manners or—most noticeable of all—their accents, that they are not like everyone else in every other way as well. Whatever the hidden inwardnesses of the hierarchy, it translates itself into no palpable variation of manner. Friendliness and equality are matters of pride, just as reserve and self-differentiation are matters of pride in Eastern cities. Class, as measured in money, of course exists, although the spread is by national standards very narrow. But class as measured by bearing and attitude simply does not.
I can’t even. Professor Bloom, I have never been happier to have opted out of your journalism classes while in college. This largely offensive and disasteful article is filled with little more than tired cliches, gross generalizations and feeble imagery. I hope Bloom takes the time to read the comments section, because (most, though not all) people make some excellent, and painfully obvious, points on things he happened to have “missed” while living in Iowa City.
I’m legitamitely raging right now.
Kirk is so badass, I can’t handle it.
I cannot put into words how excited I am for Hawkeye football tomorrow!
Hawkeye football season is just around the corner! Finally!!!
The amount of time I spent dropping off my work and picking up assignments at the Dey House never ceases to amaze me. I loved that building and what I felt every time I walked into it.
fuckyeahunitedstates: University of Iowa
If you haven’t watched it, watch it. Zach Wahls, a University of Iowa engineering student who scored in the 99th percentile on the ACTs, tells the Iowa House of Representatives that his family is the same as theirs.*
*I personally feel his family is in no question better than any of the republicans’ in that room, as he was raised in a home that taught him non-conditional love, progressive values and, most importantly, that people are equal.
From Stanzi interview: “It’s not cool — Classes with a communist — Absolutely, it’s very liberal over here, very liberal. I know what you mean. Some people think it is. You get to college and this seems to be the most liberal place ever. I remember telling that to my dad and he said, that’s just how colleges are. I don’t know how other colleges are, but when you walk around here, you’ve got people … you’ve got guys walking around in dresses. I’ve seen and hippies. They’re doing nothing. There’s the Ped Mall area down there. Right in the middle. Those people are going nowhere. Those people are the people who don’t like America. They always find something wrong with it. They’re the problem. They’re the people who need to change and figure it out. They need to get it together and work hard. The people who are doing things right and working hard, they don’t complain because there’s no point in complaining. When something happens to you, you take it on the chin and keep moving forward.”
And then he goes on to talk about how he didn’t vote, but that’s not even the point. I’m really disappointed (not 100% surprised) that he has such a conservative mentality and also that he would say such a completely douchey thing. The whole interview is such a perfect example of white privilege, and as both a Hawkeye fan and Stanzi fan, it’s really disappointing and frustrating thing to watch.
UGH WHATEVER HE WAS FROM OHIO ANYWAY.
