The United States has fallen 27 places in the Press Freedom Index. The reason? The many arrests of journalists covering Occupy protests.
El Salvador, which is tragically plagued with horrific violence, and Japan, guilty of censoring the press over Fukushima, placed well above the United States. Incredible.

I can’t even. Professor Bloom, I have never been happier to have opted out of your journalism classes while in college. This largely offensive and disasteful article is filled with little more than tired cliches, gross generalizations and feeble imagery. I hope Bloom takes the time to read the comments section, because (most, though not all) people make some excellent, and painfully obvious, points on things he happened to have “missed” while living in Iowa City.
I’m legitamitely raging right now.
liberationfrequency: Why Cenk Uygur Left MSNBC
Cenk Uygur (host of The Young Turks) explains why he turned down a new, significantly larger MSNBC contract after hosting a prime-time show on the network that was beating CNN in the key demo ratings.
This is really interesting about the obedience and conformity of the US news media as State propaganda. I’ve gained a lot of respect for Cenk from this decision, I may not agree with everything he says on TYT, but at least he has principles and cares about truth. Good on him.
That’s ballsy. If only this kind of integrity wasn’t so rare in the mainstream media.

The race for best drama picture at the Golden Globes is a close contest between “Avatar” and “Up in the Air,” according to the predictions of these pundits: Thelma Adams (Us Weekly), Lane Brown(Vulture, New York Magazine), Erik Davis (Cinematical), Edward Douglas (ComingSoon.net),Scott Feinberg (AndTheWinnerIs), Marshall Fine (Star Magazine, Hollywood and Fine), Pete Hammond (Notes on a Season, The Envelope), Dave Karger (Entertainment Weekly), Kevin Lewin (World Entertainment News Network), Guy Lodge (InContention), Michael Musto (Village Voice), Steve Pond (The Odds, TheWrap), Sam Rubin (KTLA), Sasha Stone (AwardsDaily), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Jeff Wells (Hollywood-Elsewhere), Susan Wloszczyna (USA Today).
I love love love love love awards season! I like to pretend I’m a highly respected peer of the journalists above and write out my own predictions for each big show.
“These kids are paying upwards of $70,000 for a ghost’s chance of landing a job, at pitiful pay, in an industry that is rapidly collapsing.”
Basically.
I miss when journalism was almost solely a medium for people who truly loved writing and informing others.
I’m now following one of my favorite, if not favorite, professors from college on twitter. Don McLeese basically had/has the career path of my dreams, and in addition to being one of the nicest and most helpful people I’ve ever met, he’s easily one of the brightest.
Click here to learn about a few of his many career accomplishments.

Depressing, but true.
Fellow Twitters:
1. change your location to Tehran

Twitter is one of the only places Iranians are getting out information to the outside world/each other right now and the Iranian government is trying their best to block everyone with the location Tehran from reaching twitter inside of Iran. They are also monitoring the #iranelection tag. If we all become Iranians on Tehran, they can’t possibly block us all. Twitter is VERY important for Iranians to reach each other and give out messages about possible danger/compromised places in Iran.
International media outlets have been banned from reporting in Iran atm so Twitter is all we’ve got. Help them out!

Fuck this shit. After a too-quick trial behind fucking closed doors? Are you shitting me? I shouldn’t be surprised, but I’m really disappointed.
