FROM ARTICLE: People like bank directors are regarded by some with respect, if not with awe, and resented by others. But the bank directors live in the same kind of houses as everyone else, and there is no way of telling, from their clothes or their manners or—most noticeable of all—their accents, that they are not like everyone else in every other way as well. What­ever the hidden inwardnesses of the hierarchy, it translates itself into no palpable variation of manner. Friendliness and equality are matters of pride, just as reserve and self-differentiation are matters of pride in Eastern cities. Class, as measured in money, of course exists, although the spread is by national standards very narrow. But class as measured by bearing and attitude simply does not.

The amount of time I spent dropping off my work and picking up assignments at the Dey House never ceases to amaze me. I loved that building and what I felt every time I walked into it.

The no-nonsense swing state city is infused with intellectual curiosity. The state supreme court ruling in favor of marriage equality is but one moment in a long history of progressive decisions. Home of the famous Iowa Writers’ Workshop and a thriving arts community, this is where Brokeback Mountain’s Ennis and Jack would have bought a house and adopted kids, in the alternate ending of that romance.

My gay BFF Louis, who is from a suburb of Chicago but was a journalism classmate of mine at the University of Iowa, did an internship at The Advocate his senior year. I wonder if his stories of Studio 13 had anything to do with their choice? Doubtful, but you never know.

We are no longer undefeated.
We are no longer in the running for the BSC Championship.
And we might lose our until now guaranteed spot at the Rose Bowl if Stanzi’s ankle isn’t healed by next week’s game against Ohio State.

I cannot believe we lost this game. I am so disappointed.

Umm, ya think? I’m at home and almost had a heart attack. I cannot imagine being at Kinnick during this game.

ANYWAY, WE ARE 9-0!!! I am so happy!

I’ve been MIA lately, because, well, I’ve been busing watching MIA and a bunch of other performers at Street Scene in San Diego. We were front row for almost every show (Girl Talk, Deadweather, MIA, Of Montreal, Holy Fuck, Conor Oberst with surprise guest JENNY LEWIS) and only towards the middle for just a few (Public Enemy, Modest Mouse, Cake). We also stopped by a couple of other bands, but focused more on trying to watch full sets this year. I wish I could relive the weekend over again or at least certain performances. Oh, and we had happy hour at this great little Mexican place called La Puerta, and I fell in love. Their drinks were delicious, strong and incredibly cheap (maybe I’m just used to LA prices now, but whatever) and their food the same. I want to take another weekend trip to San Diego, because I’ve only ever gone there for Street Scene, just to soak the town in. The Gaslamp District reminds me so much of the pedmall in Iowa City, which I miss. Must go back soon!
